Alchemist Kitchen’s Strategic Approach to Fundraising
Based on an interview with Jacob Sacks, Program Manager

In Sacramento, CA, Alchemist Kitchen has become a beacon of support for underserved food entrepreneurs, offering education, incubation, and essential resources through a program designed to foster economic empowerment. As a nonprofit under Alchemist CDC, which is dedicated to food equity, Alchemist Kitchen has strategically leveraged fundraising to fuel its growth and expand its impact. The story of how this initiative developed is one of inspiration, strategic partnerships, and resilience.

The Journey Begins

Alchemist Kitchen’s origins are rooted in the broader mission of Alchemist CDC, which initially focused on increasing access to healthy food in underserved communities by enabling the use of food stamps at farmers’ markets. However, the organization soon recognized that directly supporting food entrepreneurs could have a deeper, more lasting economic impact. Inspired by La Cocina, a San Francisco-based food incubator that aids marginalized communities, Alchemist Kitchen was conceived to uplift aspiring food entrepreneurs in Sacramento.

Building the Foundation

From the outset, fundraising was critical to the development of Alchemist Kitchen. Jacob Sacks, though new to grant writing, applied his technical and legal writing background to craft compelling grant proposals that would lay the financial foundation for the program. The first major success came with a grant from the USDA’s Local Food Promotion Program (LFPP), which funded the research and planning necessary to launch the incubator.

Collaboration played a pivotal role in this phase. Partnering with the University of California, Davis and community organizations, Alchemist Kitchen conducted a thorough feasibility study in 2018. This study was instrumental in identifying the needs of Sacramento’s food entrepreneurs and validating the concept of a shared kitchen and business incubator. Drawing on insights from similar programs like El Pajaro and Portland Mercado, community development corporations (CDCs) that leverage food entrepreneurship as a strategy to lift individuals out of poverty, the study laid the groundwork for Alchemist Kitchen’s strategic development. CDCs are 501c3 non-profit organizations that are created to support and revitalize communities, particularly those that are underinvested. The feasibility study emphasized the importance of offering a comprehensive support structure, including business training and access to affordable kitchen space.

Program Development and Expansion

Alchemist Kitchen’s programs were carefully designed to meet the specific needs of food Alchemist Kitchen (2023). entrepreneurs in underserved communities. The team launched the Alchemist Microenterprise Academy (AMA), a 12-week course that teaches the fundamentals of starting and running a food business. Graduates of this program could then apply for the Incubator Program, which offered deeper technical assistance, mentorship, and low- cost access to a fully equipped commercial kitchen.

However, a significant challenge loomed: the need for a dedicated kitchen space. Alchemist Kitchen pressed on, initially supporting entrepreneurs by connecting them with other shared kitchen spaces in the area. The turning point came with the pursuit of the HUD Promise Zone grant in Sacramento. This $150,000 award enabled Alchemist Kitchen to pilot the first Alchemist Microenterprise Academy (AMA) cohorts and seriously explore options for a permanent kitchen facility.

Overcoming Challenges and Achieving Milestones

In May 2021, Alchemist Kitchen reached a major milestone when it acquired kitchen space in Sacramento’s River District. Funded through strategic partnerships and sustained fundraising efforts, Alchemist Kitchen entered a significant growth phase. This facility not only expanded Alchemist Kitchen’s capacity to support local food entrepreneurs through expanded incubator offerings but also became a revenue-generating asset through kitchen rentals. By providing affordable, state-of-the-art kitchen space to those who otherwise wouldn’t have access, Alchemist Kitchen removed a significant barrier for aspiring business owners.

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic forced a quick pivot to virtual programming, and Alchemist Kitchen moved their training and incubation sessions to Zoom. Surprisingly, this shift led to greater participation, as the virtual format eliminated obstacles like transportation and childcare. This adaptability not only demonstrated the resilience of Alchemist Kitchen but also made the program more attractive to funders, who saw it as an innovative response to unprecedented challenges.

Long-Term Vision and Expansion

Alchemist Kitchen’s long-term vision is embodied in the ambitious Alchemist Public Market project, a $12 million endeavor planned for Sacramento’s River District. Scheduled to open by the end of 2025, this market will be a comprehensive food equity ecosystem featuring a public market, production kitchens, incubation spaces, classrooms, and a café. The project is designed to create a centralized hub for food entrepreneurs, offering them the resources and community support they need to thrive.

The sustained fundraising efforts that have supported Alchemist Kitchen’s growth are a testament to its strategic approach. By aligning its initiatives with broader economic and community development goals and demonstrating tangible results with each grant, Alchemist Kitchen has built a solid foundation for ongoing success. The organization continues to secure additional funding, which has been crucial in expanding its programs and realizing its long-term vision.

Final Thoughts

Alchemist Kitchen’s strategic approach to fundraising, characterized by careful grant selection, strong partnerships, and an ability to adapt to challenges, has been pivotal to its success. The organization’s journey from initial program development to acquiring a dedicated kitchen and planning a $12 million public market exemplifies the importance of aligning program goals with broader community development objectives. Alchemist Kitchen stands as a model for other organizations aiming to make a significant impact in the food equity space, showcasing how strategic fundraising can drive growth and create lasting change.
